Wholesale Watermelons

AUG TO JULY
What is summer without a watermelon? The famous sweet red fruit has been a signature part of cookouts, picnics, and fun-filled childhood afternoons for generations, but it took watermelons a long time to become the sweet, desired fruit it is today. Original watermelons were bitter and very tough to cut through with little amount of edible fruit inside. They were valued for their high water capacity and ability to be stored in cool, dry areas for months at a time, thus providing the ancient civilizations that farmed them a source of hydration. They were especially popular with Egyptians, and through selective breeding over time the fruit got sweeter, larger, and grew a softer exterior. For a long time, watermelon flesh wasn’t even red. Writing or artwork depicting watermelons has been found from around 400 A.D. exhibiting a melon with a yellow or yellow-orange interior rather than the deep red we are familiar with. By the 14th century the red melons had appeared through additional selective breeding, as redder color was associated with a higher sugar content.

Watermelons Wholesale Packages

There’s no doubt the juicy interior of a watermelon is the sweetest part of the fruit. When you’re finished munching on the middle the green rind can be eaten as well and used for all sorts of things. Surprisingly, the tough exterior is chock full of beneficial nutrients like amino acids and lycopene. It can also help to lower blood pressure. Some cultures pickle watermelon rinds, others add them to stir-fry or stews. Some Japanese growers have even begun turning their watermelon into works of art, growing them inside shaped braces to form them into cubes, hearts, pyramids, and more.
